ABOUT THE ROLE

The Youth Career Coach represents JVS-SoCal in the community and seeks opportunities to expand partnerships and opportunities for In-School and Out-of-School Youth. This position assists youth to build confidence and increase employability skills. Must meet weekly, quarterly, and yearly program goals. Provides professional and skilled assessments, career guidance, resume assistance and employment preparation services to candidates. Updates agency database, Upload eligibility documents to the Cal-jobs portal and provides client- tracking reports to management.

Other key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Will work directly with youth identified as "at-risk" and "high risk" youth high needs ages 14 – 24 years of age.
  • Open to working some evenings and weekends.
  • Will conduct cold calls and develop new job leads for assigned clients.
  • Will conduct presentations and assist job seeker and job readiness skills
  • Develops and updates Individual Service Plans as per the requirements of the WIOA funded Youth Program to guide participant workforce services, including employment placement both subsidized and unsubsidized.
  • Will obtain employment verifications and provide client progress notes and data for case files. Conducts orientations for participants in accordance with program requirements of the WIOA and funded Youth Program.
  • Guides participants towards the acquisition of skills and credentials including tracking attendance, supporting career interests, and responding to barriers to success.
  • Performs other record keeping and participant case file management including case file compliance, case notes, performance outcomes, activities, supportive services, incentives, stipends, and participant internship payroll.
  • Coordinates and tracks referrals for needs such as housing support, mental/behavioral health services, participant identification, food stamps and other public benefits.
  • Develops external community resources and education regarding sexual health/family planning, financial literacy/banking, and other needed services for participants to ensure success towards meeting goals.
  • Facilitate individual assessment, case planning; vocational/educational activities, and outcomes planning; Implement individual service plans (ISP). Develop Individualized Employment Plan (IEP) and Individual Service Strategy (ISS).
  • Provide individual and group instruction in employment readiness, job search and retention skills.
  • Conduct outreach and recruitment for eligible clients. Assist in the development of client educational pathways via collaborations with vocational training providers that lead to postsecondary credentials in high growth industries.
  • Facilitate additional programs and duties designed by supervisor to achieve success of programs and meet JVS-SoCal mission.

  • Ability to research, process and organize a variety of information applicable to youth services.

  • Experience working with diverse communities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and attention to detail in documentation.
  • At least 1 year of related working experience with high-risk, at risk, probation, foster care, and/or low-income youth and/or parents.
  • Proficiency in Window/Microsoft Office environment.
  • Can-do, positive attitude.
  • Effective problem-solving skills
  • Experience making cold calls and developing new job leads for youth.
  • Experience with group facilitation, group presentations and case management.
  • Sensitivity and awareness for youth culture, diversity, and youth inclusion concepts including the principles and practices of youth development.
  • Experience working with youth and/or young adults in an education, workforce, or social service setting.

EDUCATION

Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Education, Psychology, Sociology or related field, or 60 units of college credit, or equivalent experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent must be able to do the following: stand for extended periods; sit for extended periods; bend and reach for filing and other job-related functions; climb up and down stairs; bend, stoop, and lift to move and retrieve materials; pull, push, and lift; reach both above and below shoulder height. Specific visual abilities include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to visually inspect work. Manual dexterity to operate computer and other office equipment required. Travel to employer and client work sites is frequent. May be required to work some evenings and an occasional weekend day. Requires traveling to various business and other work sites as well.
