Description

Supervises and manages staff performing health information management functions in their assigned areas. Assists in preparation of information and correspondence regarding charts.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

•Must be a high school graduate or equivalent

•Three years of acute care medical records and coding experience required

•RHIT with coding experience required

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

•The HIM Data Specialist utilizes audit tools to monitor integrity of HIM systems.

•Monitors compliance with policies and procedures relevant to clinical data management and makes suggestions for improvements.

•Interprets/analyzes data from revenue cycle reports.

•Verifies, calculates and maintains daily and monthly quantitative statistical data.

•Prepares data for submission to various registries.

•Monitors delinquency rate/timeliness of documentation and reports delinquencies to appropriate physician.

•Utilizes electronic medical record, document imaging programs and other applications in a productive and efficient manner.

•Performs ROI functions, when necessary, in compliance with federal and state laws and CMH policies.

•Performs birth registrar functions as needed.

•Notifies Revenue Cycle Director whenever work is more than 48 hours behind work deadline

•Reviews coding periodicals within seven (7) days of receipt

•Assists with processing of ED records as needed.

•Acts as a resource person to hospital staff for coding and may provide education regarding coding changes/issues.

•Acts as a resource person to lower level H.I.M. staff for release of information, statistical reports, and medical record requirements.

•Must be familiar with all medical record and coding requirements, including acute, obstetrical, surgical and SNF.

•Codes all diagnoses/procedures in accordance with ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting

•Ensures data quality and optimum reimbursement allowable under the federal and state payment systems

•Provides prompt provision of diagnosis and procedure codes to the appropriate department(s) for billing/claims

•Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.

•Maintains a good working relationship within the department and other departments.

•Willing to accept additional assignments.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

•High-stress environment

•Exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions

•Pushing and pulling heavy objects

•Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients

•Position requires light lifting of 5-10 pounds

•Position requires reaching, bending, stooping, and handling objects with hands and/or fingers, talking and/or hearing, and seeing

•Mental demands include: alertness, analytic ability, memory, concentration, judgment, initiative, precision, creativity and communication.
